Electro-acoustic fairy tales for the modern age

Imagine an omniscient storyteller who is willing to tell you your entire life story from beginning to end. The only problem is: you have no clue what language this narrator is speaking, and the only way to piece everything together is by trying to follow the dramaturgy of the story; to interpret and feel the emotions, sounds and textures of words and sentences. In the end, the listener will unavoidably have created his or her own story.

This is what Cyriel Vandenabeele, guitarist in bands such as SUWI and Kosmo Sound, does on Verhalen (“Storying”). The music is abstract but melodic, ever-changing but soothing, and offers a wide range of interpretations. More so, when playing live Cyriel interacts with his listeners and tells them each a unique story - one that mutates and evolves while performing, depending on the people in the audience and the environment. But how do you put such volatile, chameleonic music on a record?

Like in so many oral traditions, at one point a scribe emerges who manages to pick up and record a version; in this case that was sound engineer / producer Koen Gisen. He managed to capture Cyriel’s story as it was told to him in the studio, and by doing so also involved himself in the telling. This documented rendition is only a snapshot of a rich tradition, the only reporting, and precisely therein lies its value. Now, this fleeting moment belongs to everyone; but where the story itself goes, nobody knows.
